Project Overview
At Focus Design Build, we believe that small spaces can make a big impact, especially when they serve the people at the heart of essential operations. When Eureka Recycling, a mission-driven nonprofit operating one of the few zero-waste recycling facilities in the country, reached out to modernize the staff restrooms at its Minneapolis Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), we knew the project would be compact in scope but rich in purpose.
Our goal was clear: deliver clean, comfortable, durable restrooms that honor the dignity of Eureka’s workforce, without disrupting their critical day-to-day operations. Working in partnership with the Eureka team, we transformed 800 square feet into spaces that reflect the organization’s values of sustainability, accessibility, and respect for people.
The Scope
The renovation encompassed a complete interior refresh; selective demolition, upgrades to plumbing, ventilation, and lighting, as well as new finishes and ADA-compliant layouts. Sustainability and longevity guided every material and system choice, from low-VOC paints to high-efficiency fixtures and LED lighting with occupancy sensors.
Our work included:
- New restroom layouts to improve accessibility and privacy
- Slip-resistant flooring and high-durability wall finishes
- Water-saving plumbing fixtures and upgraded ventilation systems
- Energy-efficient lighting and electrical upgrades
- Sustainable waste handling and material selection
- Phased scheduling to maintain restroom access throughout construction
Focus in Action: Value Delivered
1. Thoughtful Coordination in a High-Traffic Facility
Operating in an active MRF meant carefully planning around foot traffic and production. Our team worked off-hours and in phased segments, maintaining uninterrupted access to restrooms and ensuring a safe, clean environment throughout construction.
2. Worker-Centric Design
We collaborated closely with Eureka to design restrooms that prioritize employee well-being. Every element from air quality, lighting, finishes, and layout was chosen to enhance comfort, safety, and dignity in the workplace.
3. On-Time, On-Budget Delivery
Despite industry-wide supply chain challenges, Focus managed procurement proactively and leaned on trusted subcontractors to meet both timeline and budget expectations. The project wrapped in just four weeks without compromise.
4. Sustainability Aligned with Mission
True to Eureka’s zero-waste mission, we diverted construction waste, sourced sustainable materials, and ensured that every aspect of the build aligned with their environmental commitments.
Challenges We Solved
Working in Tight Quarters
The existing infrastructure posed layout constraints. Our team navigated these limitations with smart, code-compliant solutions that maximized usability without requiring costly structural changes.
Minimizing Downtime
With virtually no room for restroom shutdowns, we developed a precise phasing strategy, sequencing the work in tandem with Eureka’s schedule and minimizing impact on facility operations.
A Trusted Partner in Progress
While this may have been a “simple” project on paper, it’s one that speaks volumes. The Eureka MRF Restroom renovation underscores our team’s ability to partner with mission-driven clients on projects that blend utility with purpose, and to do it all with care, coordination, and craftsmanship.
We’re proud to support Eureka Recycling in their ongoing work and look forward to continuing our partnership on future facilities improvements.
